Directors honor National Board Certified educators

Nine Puyallup educators have earned National Board Certification -- one of the highest recognitions in the education profession -- this past year.


The school board presented the honorees with a rose and a certificate. Each of the educators also received a name badge with the new National Board Certified title.


Vince Pecchia, chief academic officer of Regional Learning Community #1, recognized the newly certified educators. He also thanked Traci Frank and Leanne McKillip, two teachers who have facilitated professional development and workshops for the school district's National Board candidates.


Puyallup School District's nine new National Board Certified educators, listed by the school where they worked during the 2013-14 school year, are:

Other school board business


In other business, the board: 

  • Held a second reading and approved school board policies titled: High School Graduation Requirements; Use of Tobacco and Nicotine Substances; District Relationships with Law Enforcement and Other Government Agencies; Recruitment and Selection of Employees; Employment: Disclosures, Certification Requirements, Assurances, and Approval; Certification Revocation; Nondiscrimination and Affirmative Action; and Collective Bargaining.
  • Heard a report from Casey Cox, assistant superintendent of instructional and organizational alignment, on the 2015-18 High School Course of Study.
  • Continued discussion about an education plan to address crowded schools and continued enrollment growth by moving sixth graders at some of the most heavily impacted schools to junior high schools with available space.
  • Held a moment of silence in remembrance of Sarah Cypher and Terry Cavender, two Puyallup School District educators who recently passed away. Cypher most recently taught at Stahl Junior High, and Cavender most recently served as the school district's director of operations.
  • Approved a $6,250 donation from the Fruitland Elementary School PTA to the school to fund class enrichment for kindergarten through sixth grade.
  • Approved a $9,520 donation from the Brouillet Elementary School PTA to the school to fund grade level enrichment.
  • Heard a report on the 2013-14 Career and Technical Education Districtwide Evaluation and Annual Program Plan by Mark Knight, executive director of college and career readiness. As part of the report, Rogers High School students enrolled in manufacturing classes explained what they are learning. They presented each of the board members and Superintendent Tim Yeomans with a pepper mill they designed and manufactured. Puyallup High Culinary Arts teacher Janese Lassen also represented Career and Technical Education courses. She served a creme brulee dessert to board members and truffles to the audience.
